22/05/2011 - Llanelli Sprint Triathlon
Congratulations to all who finished the fiasco of a triathlon at Llanelli this morning and a big thank you to those members who came to support.
For those who were not there, the swim started well with 3 waves at 10 minute intervals due to the largest ever field for this race being over 250. The bike was an out and back ride almost to Kidwelly with a very strong cross wind affecting everyone's speed and time on the way out and riders only having the benefit of the wind for the last half of the return journey. Fortunately the roads were quiet and most car drivers could see how the bikes were affected by the wind and gave a wide berth when over-taking.
Now the run. It was planned as a two lap run being a total of 5k. For those who know the coastal path it was from transition, over the railway bridge and turn at the dragon sign, back the same way and this would have been one loop. Unfortunately no-one told the marshals. When I got to the Dragon turn I could see the leaders still running on and some considerable distance ahead. Like everyone else I carried on. After running for 15 minutes the leaders had still not come on their return run (alarming for only a 5k run) but at 20minutes I could see a group of 4 heading towards me with a further group of maybe 50 a couple of hundred metres behind. The larger group were signalling for everyone to turn around, we did and jogged back. On the way back I saw other Club members who had been told to run through and turn at the tennis courts (5k each way) and when I got back to the finish there were Club members who had been turned around at the 1.5k. In all, I did close to 8k, many others varying distances up to 10k and some as little as 3k. The race organiser was at the finish apologising to each competitor as they crossed the line.
Despite race brief making it clear to turn at the dragon point, the lead runners reported being told to keep running by the marshal when they got there. I cannot even remember seeing a marshal at that point. Everyone assumed they had changed the route due to the weather.
Although the race had been abandoned as a triathlon by then, the slower competitors were still sent out on their run, I have no idea where they turned or what distance they completed, some finished close on an hour after me, perhaps some are still running and should be in pembroke by now.
The official line is that the race will be reduced to a swim/bike only, whilst I have not seen those results yet we will have to adopt this for our Club points, it is unfortunate for the runners in the Club who would have hoped to pick off places in the run.
Comment has already been made to the organisers of how disappointed we are as a Club, who had a large turn out on the day, and how this may affect our Club Championship.
Perhaps, also, we should all learn from this the importance of marshals during a race and how an inadequate number can spoil the event for everyone. From me, may I thank everyone who has marshalled so far this year, especially in the races that I have taken part in.

17/05/2011 - GE Triathlon Draw
Hi All,
A draw was held last saturday for the two members to represent the Club at the GE Triathlon, those drawn out were Scott Davies and Katie Silk and we wish them well for this race.
It has come to my attention that many receiving this email have yet to rejoin the Club for 2011, I would be grateful if this could now be done as a matter of priority. Several have raced in Club colours this year so I'm sure this is only an oversight.
Please see thefollowing web site, some of our more adventerous members may be interested but I'm sure I have something else on that day. Thanks to Dai Richards for the info:
Good luck to all those taking part at Llanelli at the weekend, see you there.
I have just received confirmation that Tuska Sprint Triathlon will now be going ahead this year on 31 July, info is available at

26/04/2011 - TRAINING DAY UPDATE
Hi all,
We have now arranged a training day for Saturday 15 May 2011 to be held at Glynneath Swimming Pool. The day is planned to cater for all abilities with a specific group catering for novices or those wishing to improve core triathlon skills.
12 - 1pm The hall within the pool building is booked between 12 noon - 1pm, there will be a brief talk and advise on neutrician for those just starting the sport up to and including those competing in an Ironman event, we will also have question and answers on specific training needs, racing tips and rules including transition infringements and drafting regulations.
13:15 - 16:15: During the afternoon session those present will be split into groups depending on ability. We will concentrate on running skills and drills, cycling skills and drills, transition skills and drills. Depending on numbers present we may need to rotate groups between coaches. There will also be specific novice groups for each of the above and within the novice groups we will concentrate on bike mount and dismount, transition skills and cycling skills including the use of gears.
16:30 - 17:30: Coached swim session at Glynneath Pool
There will be no swim session at Dyfed Road on the Saturday of this training day.
18:30: We have booked the function room at Aberdulais Golf Driving Range where bar meals are available at an average of £7 per person. Prior to the food we will hold a de-brief session on the day's activities and a further question and answer session on any individual concerns.
We anticipate the cost of the day being in the region of £7 to cover our outlay (this does not cover the food afterwards). The day will also go ahead regardless of weather.
To enable these days to be a success we need the support of our members and coaches. Places need to be booked in advance as numbers will need to be given to the Staff at the pool. I would be grateful if members would contact me at their earliest convenience to book and pay for their place. Should any member only wish to take part in the swim session this will cost £3.50.
Family members can join us for food afterwards as this will be booked from the standard menu on the day, I will however also need to know numbers in advance.
Kit requirements will be running kit including trainers, cycling clothes including bike and helmet, swimming kit. For those novices I would recommend having standard flat peddles on your bike for the mount and dismount drills and wear trainers.
I would be grateful if all members could respond to this email even if they are not attending and advise regarding food afterwards and if anyone else will be joining you. Please would all Club coaches confirm their availability.
Any questions regarding this event can be addressed to me however I am going to be away from Saturday until Thursday May 5th or to Rose and Terry Jones at

If you have aspirations of becoming a triathlon coach now could be your chance. Celtic Tri are looking for 1 or 2 of its members to become Level 1 British Triathlon accredited coaches. We have funding available to cover the cost of the course itself. We need some extra coaches to assist our existing Level 2 and 3 coaches with the club sessions.
Information about becoming a triathlon coach and what it involves can be found on the British Triathlon website. If you feel it could be for you and you are willing to contribute regularly then contact me for further details.

Neath Valley Tri 2010
A message from race organiser Adrian Hughes.
Over the past few months people have asked me “How is the Triathlon going?”, well the truthful answer to that was “ Early this year I started the snowball rolling, its getting faster and growing bigger, and is now out of my control, it’ll stop when it stops” which it did on the day and thankfully all was well.
The day was long, hard and very successful, apologies go out from me to you all for turning up at “Daft O’clock” on a dark September Sunday morning and with out any prompting each and every one who assisted done their job without hesitation, and likewise again you all mucked in at the end to dismantle and clean the site, you cannot believe how much that helps the me as the organiser to know that as a team the jobs will get done, like any well successful pub the licensee’s name features on the door but without the team of bar staff, kitchen staff, cleaners, glass collectors, suppliers and of course customers, that pub is just a shell.
Although my name featured as the Race Organiser, many many others helped out to make the 2nd Neath Valley Tri a great one.
Special thank you from me to all the Marshals who helped and those who volunteered to sit or stand for hours at some very remote locations ticking off numbers as the fly by and to all the entrants for making up the numbers.
Finally apologies to those who had to face the undignified ranting of some locals, you all handled your selves with utmost professionalism and courtesy throughout and allowed me as organiser to face the nose to nose screaming and door slamming as only the organiser should.
I said last year and repeat again this year “There is no I in team”
The calendar is fantastic.
Well Done and Thanks.
Ade
