03/01/2012 - Club Update

I hope you had an excellent Christmas break and New Year celebrations. Some dates for your diaries:

Saturday 7 January: Swimming resumes at Neath Dyfed Road 18:30-19:30
Monday 9 January: Swimming at Cymmer pool 20:00-21:00
Wednesday 11 January: Track session at Cwrt Herbert 18:30-19:30
Friday 13 January: Swimming at Cymmer pool 18:00-19:00

Next Sunday sees the resumption of the cross country season. Graham has already sent out details regarding this and posted on Facebook. It would be great to see a large turn out from the Club, if not running then supporting. Should you have any questions regarding the event or cross country generally then contact Graham g.vyner@ntlworld.com

Saturday 28 January is the Club dinner at The Towers Hotel, Jersey Marine. Tickets at £20 are still available either from Rose rosemarie.jones@hotmail.com or me. If you are interested but have not yet had tickets please let us know so we have an idea of numbers. Final details have to be given to the Towers one week before the event. I understand that rooms are still available at the dicounted rate but will need to be booked directly with The Towers.

Hope you all have a great 2012 and see you at our training sessions

27/12/2011 - Cross Country Fixture

Our next cross-country fixture is January 8th...then 2 weeks later there is another! Get off the sofa and train...you can't possibly watch Celebrity Juice or The Bourne Supremacy again today!

I expect all of you to be eating healthily, drinking plenty of water & taking plenty of supplements to protect you from nasty germs spread by nasty kids. There are rumours that some club members are starting to look like piggies-in-their-blankets....one committee-member has apparently got Marks & Spencer twisted cheesy breadsticks where their toes used to be!

Anyway, the link to the West Glam cross-country website is below. Don't worry too much about the comment concerning 'spikes' - I've done 30 or so x-country races & never worn mine ......wearing spikes is like using the brakes when you cycle downhill....boring!!!

http://www.westglamleague.co.uk/4.html

All the best & see you soon - I've got two races in the next 24 hours so can't afford to lose any more time typing nonsense!

Regards & all the best for 2012 & beyond....

Graham

For those I wont see, have a really Happy Christmas and great 2012

25/11/2011 - Fancy Dress Race

I am now able to confirm details of our fun run and Christmas Party which will take place on Sunday 11 December 2011.

We will meet for registration at 1;30pm at the car park of The Railway Tavern which is situated between Tonna and Aberdulais, directly opposite the Calor Gas Plant. The run will start from the nearby railway arch at 2pm. The main run is along the canal towpath on an out and back route and is 4km in total, there will be a shorter run of 3.1K for juniors, beginners or anyone who would prefer a shorter distance. When you register you advise which distance you will be doing.

There will be a small prize for first male and female over the longer distance and the opportunity to be the first Club members to hold that course record at least until next year. During the run we will be awarding spot prizes, which will include the best Christmas fancy dress, the best non Christmas fancy dress and the loudest singing of "So Here It Is Merry Christmas" over a designated part of the course.

After the run we meet at 3pm at "The Riverside", which is part of the Golf Driving Range at Aberdulais for our Christmas afternoon. Please note there are no shower facilities so bring plenty of wet wipes. At the party we have a hot buffet/carvery and a DJ is booked. There will be various prizes given out throughout the afternoon and maybe even a few party games for children of all ages. There will be a special presentation to all those present who have completed their first Ironman this year.

Organiser for the event is Carol Vyner, 07742 190041, carol.vyner@ntlworld.com  or through the Club Facebook page. Please contact Carol as soon as possible, we must let Riverside know final numbers by Tuesday 6 November. The cost is £10 per person or capped at £30 for a family of 2 adults and 2 children, the cost remains the same whether you take part in the whole or part of the day. When booking please advise if there are any special dietary requirements or whether you qualify fot the Ironman presentation.

All family members are welcome whether Club members or not.

21/11/2011 - Club Leisure Kit & Fancy Dress Race

Paul Arnold and Picton Sports will be organising all aspects of the Club's Leisure kit. I have attached an order form for any pre-Christmas orders, all enquiries should be directed to Paul but please note all orders must be accompanied by the payment also. We are currently looking into racing kit but there will be no orders until 2012. I am holding a few items of the previous kit and will collate a list shortly.

We are in the process of organising a short fancy dress run for the afternoon of Sunday December 11th. This race is likely to start at or near the canal basin at Aberdulais, car parking is available at the adjacent Railway Tavern which has closed down. After the race we will be holding a Christmas bash in the marquee of The Riverside (part of the golf driving range where we held the buffet after the Neath Valley Triathlon). In the marquee will be a hot buffet, DJ and various spot prizes.

Please keep the date free. The invitation is being sent to all Club members to bring along members of your family, regardless of age.

Details of the run, prizes and cost will follow shortly

02/11/2011 - West Glam Cross-Country resumes THIS WEEKEND

Good morning Celtic Tri!

I attach the link into the West Glam Cross-Country League which resumes this weekend. As well as seeing the details of Sunday's racing (details pasted below for your convenience!) you can scroll sideways across the top bar & see the current league tables.

As David Cameron recently said, 'It's going to be jolly hard getting through it but if we all pull together, we can secure the future for our next generation!!'. A good show this weekend will also prevent us from having a 'winter of discontent' when we chat to our buddies in other clubs!

Can I make a MASSIVE plea to the ladies - our numbers racing at last month's fixture were down sharply on last season - can you make a special effort this weeekend please? I have asked some of the lads to do the ladies race but with the trend for charity moustache-growing this month, my plan may be spotted by race officials!

Thank you
Graham

23/08/2011 - Club Update

Hi all, below are some dates for your diaries:

OPEN WATER SWIMMING
Tuesday 6th September will be the last, coached open water session at the Lakes for this year. Members can continue to make use of the lakes until the end of the year, this will still be within our licence but swimming is at your own risk.

TRACK SESSION
The track sessions at Cwrt Herbert for both the junior and senior sections of the Club will resume on Wednesday 5th October. Last year we met at 7:00pm. We are currently in negotiation with the Council to have this session slightly earlier. Neath RFC have the infield until 6:45pm which is the current stumbling block. The last track session of 2011 will be on 14 December and will resume on 11 January 2012.

CYMMER POOL
With the exception of the dates below, the pool at Cymmer is booked each Monday 6-7:00pm and Friday 8-9:00pm until Friday 16 December 2011. Swimming will then resume on Monday 9 January 2012. There will be no swimming at Cymmer this Monday 29 August. There will be no swimming at Cymmer on Friday 9th nor Monday 12th September

NEATH DYFED ROAD POOL
With the exception of the dates below, the pool at Neath is booked each Saturday 6:30-7:30pm until 17 December 2011 and will then resume on Saturday 7 January 2012. These dates however could change as Swimming Club Galas take priority and we do not have the dates for these for the remainder of 2011.
There will be no swimming at Neath this Saturday 27 August, Saturday 10 September and Saturday 24 September.

VALE OF NEATH TRIATHLON
This takes place on Sunday 25 September. Thanks to all those who have entered and a bigger thanks to those who have either volunteered or volunteered their partners to help out and Marshal. Our after race party and buffet will this year be at Golf Driving Range at Aberdulais. This will be free to all members who either race or marshal on the day.

ANNUAL CLUB DINNER
The most likely date for the Club Dinner is Saturday 28 January 2012, this has been provisionally booked with the Towers Hotel at Jersey Marine and we hope to confirm this date in the near future.

BRITISH TRIATHLON AWARDS
The Club is likely to have nominations in several categories within the Welsh Region including Club of the Year. When information regarding these nominations is known and on line voting commences I will advise further. If you have not yet joined Welsh/British Triathlon now is as good a time as ever as you need to be a member to vote, let's see how many awards we can scoop.

19/08/2011 - Club Update

Well done to everyone who spotted yesterday's mistake. ITV News will be following the Club during the IM on 11 September not our race on 25 September.

In relation to our race, we expect to reach capacity within the next couple of weeks, if you have not yet entered please do so as soon as possible. For those not taking part I would be grateful for your help on the day with setting out the event from 6:00am and then marshalling.

This year's event is being sponsored by the Golf Driving Range at Aberdulais and we shall be going back there for the buffet afterwards. This buffet is free to any member who takes part in the event or marshals. For everyone else there will be a small charge.

We are starting to compile a list of marshals. I would be grateful if you could reply to this email and let me know your availability. I also need numbers for the buffet afterwards.

07/08/2011 - Club Update

Firstly an update on Paul Boxer: following from my previous email Pauls had a hand and thumb operation at the beginning of last week and underwent back surgery yesterday morning, other than Paul appears to be ok I will have no further information until next week. Christine tries to see Paul on a daily basis whilst working in the hospital and has passed on everyone's wishes for a speedy recovery.

Next Saturday is the Cymmer off road triathlon, several Club members have entered and I believe we also have a good turn out from our junior section. As a Club we always try to help marshal this event so please come along on the day or if you are taking part perhaps your partner could help. If you are available please contact Scott directly, I have included below an extract from his email with contact details on the bottom:

Hi Ieuan, Thanks for the help.
All the marshals will need to assemble at 9.15am (a lie in for those who have helped at other events!!).  All marshals will be located around Cymmer as the forest park cover the bike route. All marshals will receive a race t-shirt, refreshments, free entry into a prize draw for a slot in one of our events, free entry into a holiday prize draw at the end of the season and a bottle of wine as a small token of thanks.  If you need any further info please let me know.  If you have any takers then I will email them on the Thursday prior to race day with specific info.
Thanks again. Kind regards, SCOTT POWELLTri & Enter Events Limited M. 07854 239 632E.

Rob Govier is back in the country and has been talking to "Sports Shoes", an extract from his email is below:

Hello Ieuan,
Finally back in UK waters and currently bobbing around off the SW Coast. Training for the Ironman has been a bit of a nightmare and I have had to change my time based goal to a more realistic happy to cross the line before 17hrs is up approach. The furthest I have run in the last two months has been a 10miler while the ship stopped in Canada to refuel, further south where we have spent the majority of our time its just been too hot to run any further that 6 mile. Cycling has been good but its just so Florida is just too flat, the spinning bikes in the gym have also been getting a hiding. Swimming has been a wetsuit free event with water temps in the high 20’s, I had persuaded the Commanding Officer to stop the ship so I could have a swim while out at sea but the two Hammerheads that cruised down the side of the ship put me off as I was about to get in the water!

Anyway, The good people at Sportsshoes.com have offered a 10% discount for all club members, I know some club members use the site already and most items are already heavily discounted so there are some bargains to be had.

Kind Regards, Rob, CPO RJ GovierCommunications Manager HMS DAUNTLESSBFPO 272

27/07/2011 - Club Update

Hi All,

Please note the Cymmer off road triathlon including the junior races is on 13 August and not 6th August as originally advised and as stated on our wedsite. Many members of our junior section are involved in these races and I would be grateful for as much support as possible for these Club triathletes. When information is available I will send a request out for marshalls.

Please find below an extract of an email from Hannah McDyer a Club member:

Hi Ieuan, It's hannah here (the one who does the massage @ the triathlon events with bodyworks and goes training sometimes!). Just to let you know I have a clinic opening up in Celtic Leisure in the gym down the beach. Its open 230-6pm on the weekends and you guys get 20% off, so a consultation is £28, 1hour is £24 and 1/2 hour is £16.00. I also offer Kinesio taping if anyone is interested in that (the coloured tape you see on divers and cyclists) and rehab/ strengthening exercise programmes.
I was just wondering if you could pass this info onto your members, i'm sure there's a few in preparation for ironman!? Maybe we can dedicate a night to your club or something.
If you need any other information or want to know anything else, please do not hesitate to contact me via email/ mobile. My number is 07791744338.

Kind Regards

Hannah McDyer

I hope everyone's season is going well

01/07/2011 - Club Update

Due to holidays and other unforeseen circumstances there will be no coach cover at either Cymmer tonight (Friday) or at Neath Dyfed Road tomorrow. We will however get swim sets to pool side for those to follow. Coach cover will resume as normal at Cymmer on Monday.

We are now a Club of over 200 members, as a Committee we feel it is appropriate to get more members involved in various aspects of the Club, the three areas currently proposed are:

1. Once a quarter we attend a meeting of Neath Port Talbot District Sport Council, by attending and signing the register it allows the Club to apply for Grant Aid which will allow the Club to promote more through the coaching courses when they resume. The next meeting is at Neath Town Hall on Monday 11 July at 7:00pm. I am unable to attend so would ask any member or members to attend on behalf of the Club. There will be no involvement in the meeting other than reporting back salient points.

2. A sub group is being set up to help run the Vale of Neath Triathlon on 25 September, we are looking for 3 members to work alongside Terry Jones, Adrian Hughes and myself, ideally members who do not intend to race on the day. We will have a short meeting towards the end of July to confirm the arrangements to date and discuss requirements leading up to race day.

3. A sub group is being set up to help organise and promote the Club's Annual Dinner which is likely to be end of January/february 2012. We are looking for members to work alongside Tracey and myself. We like each year to be bigger and better than the year before so fresh ideas are always welcome.

I'm off on my hols now and will be back just before the Gower Triathlon. I look forward to seeing many of you that weekend and having, what appears to be an annual Celtictri Camping trip, If you have no other plans on July 16 come and support us and bring your tent. I am told there will be a live band again this year and we will probably all meet up for a glass or two of tonic water!!

21/06/2011 - Club Update

Glynneath Lakes

I am pleased to announce that a deal has been agreed with "Glynneath Watersports" and "Trident Watersports" the managers of the lakes at Glynneath. The Club has paid a licence fee which will allow all Club members free access to swim in the lakes at Glynneath between now and the end of the year. Those who oversee the lakes are about to stop all independant use of the lakes and therefore to have access users will need to be a current member of an approved Club which includes Celtictri, however the following rules apply:

1. All users of the lakes must have their current membership cards with them and may be asked to produce them at any time, being unable to show a card will incur a day licence charge (which could be £50 or asked to leave.
2. Club members have free access to the lakes at any time
3. The small lake is designated for swimming and other non-powered sports. The larger lake can only be used if there are no other users on the lake but must be vacated if any motor boat or jet-ski user turns up.
4. The Club has 2 keys to give access through all gates into the site and use of the changing rooms, one of these is held by Terry Jones the other I have. Other keys can be obtained and will need to be registered with one person. These will cost £18 and the owners of the lake withhold the right to change the locks on an annual basis. All keys are numbered and cannot be cut.
5. The Club intends to hold a swim session at the lakes each Tuesday 6-7:30pm. At each session we will try to have a coach and or other look out present for safety reasons. At all other times or if the Club is unable to arrange cover on a Tuesday, you swim at your own risk. On a Club night all swimmers will be asked to produce their Membership Cards.

Security cameras are being installed on the site. I would ask all club members to accept the above conditions and to check you have rejoined the Club this year, membership runs from January so everyone will need a 2011 membership card. We have negotiated  a large reduction on the normal costs of using the lakes but may lose this in future years if we abuse the above conditions.

Wednesday Track Sessions

There are normal track sessions on Wednesday 22 and 29 June, for the adults the sessions will then end through the summer and resume in October. For the Junior section of the Club, they will continue to meet and train on a Wednesday at Cwrt Herbert but the time of the session may change during the summer, Andy or Marie will confirm this in the next 2 weeks. Due to holidays, the junior section will not meet during August.

Round The Pier Swim

Below is an extract from an email received from Ludovic:

Just a quick word, you might want to inform some members that if they want to do the swim around the pier this year (10th July), they must contact the event organiser to show their interest.
His name is Bernard Donovan and his telephone numbers are: 01639812357 or 07505141137 or email address
Bernard.donovan@ntlworld.com
Ludo
The Club Championship races are well underway, we will produce an up to date chart shortly. Entries for the Club race at Glynneath is open on www.entrycentral.co.uk but filling up quickly, we are limited to the number of entrants so when all places are taken late applicants will be placed on a reserve list.

If anyone has lost or has not received their Club membership card, or needs to check they have renewed their membership this year, please contact Karen Pitt on karenpitt@ntlworld.com

27/05/2011 - Open Water Swimming

I am pleased to announce that a provisional agreement has been reached for the Club to swim at the lakes in Glynneath on a Tuesday evening 6:00 - 7:30, from June to end Sept. Only the smaller lake is available at present and, as yet costs are not known but should be finalised by the weekend. Early morning swim sessions have also been agreed for later in the year which should interest those doing an Ironman race this year. The road to the lakes is to be improved and new gates fitted to which the Club will have keys.

The sessions will not be coached but will allow members an uninterrupted 90min swim. There will however be ample experience available to sort out any problems.

Huw, who now manages the lakes is happy for any Club members to use the lakes before then and they arrange payment with him.

Please note that due to the Bank Holiday there is no swimming at Cymmer on Monday. There is swimming at Cymmer tonight and at Neath on Saturday.

The next Aquathlon session is at Cymmer Pool on Friday 10 June.
